They are typically hot aromatic pungents that are high in essential oils.
Combined with analgesics and anti-inflammatories, these herbs can warm up and clear toxins in the joint space, relieving arthritis and joint pain.
Taken as a hot tea, these herbs have a diaphoretic action that helps to stimulate a fever (dispels wind-cold). When directed towards the lungs, they can have a decongesting and expectorant effect. When directed towards the kidney, they can increase kidney perfusion and urination. Directed towards the digestive tract. they can stimulate enzyme production and nutrient absorption. Directed towards the uterus they can revitalize menstruation in absent or scanty period.
Due to the pungent, drying nature of herbs in this class, they may liquefy and dry up fluids excessively (injure the fluids / injure yin). Avoid in yin deficiency, Pitta, pregnancy, and bleeding conditions.
